Optional Practical Training, or OPT, gives F-1 visa students the opportunity to work in the U.S. in their field of study for up to 1 year after completing their degree. For STEM students, DHS can provide a 24-month extension of OPT with employers in the eVerify program.
TN status allows citizens of Canada and Mexico, considered NAFTA professionals, to work in the United States. Though only available to certain occupations, citizens of Canada and Mexico may enter the US in TN status for up to 3 years. Upon completion of the initial time in TN status, an extension of stay may be requested for up to 3 years.
